UiT The Arctic University of Norway has a position as Associate Professor available within Applied Analytical and Environmental Chemistry, hosted by the Department of Chemistry (IK).
We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated researcher to establish a new research line in applied analytical and environmental chemistry at the Department of Chemistry. This position aims to enhance the department's focus on sustainability in both research and education. It offers a unique opportunity to develop collaborations with related research environments within the University and a diverse range of local stakeholders.
The position will be associated with the Chemical Synthesis and Analysis group at the Department of Chemistry (IK) located at the Tromsø campus. IK is one of six departments within the Faculty of Science and Technology and currently offers education at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral levels. The department provides access to advanced core facilities and research infrastructure, including mass spectrometry, HPLC/UPLC, NMR, X-ray crystallography, protein production, peptide synthesis, biomolecular modeling, and computational chemistry. A number of other specialized facilities may be accessible through cross-campus collaborations. However, the position will entail building up specialized equipment/facilities required for the new research activities. The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position in Tromsø within a reasonable time, within 6 months after receiving the offer.
The announced position involves teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities. The successful candidate will establish an internationally competitive and active research program in applied analytical and environmental chemistry, focusing on regionally relevant challenges. The candidate will engage in scientific collaborations and cultivate professional networks at regional, national, and international levels, both within academia and the private sector. An emphasis on method development or the innovation of small-scale equipment will be considered advantageous.
We expect the position holder to develop grant applications and secure substantial external funding to support research and educational activities.
The position holder is also expected to contribute to enhancing the educational quality of the department. This includes engagement with subject-specific pedagogical literature, participation in collegial teaching development activities, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses (primarily in analytical, green, and environmental chemistry), supervising students at all levels, and disseminating research to the public.
It is expected that the participant will participate in research group collaboration and professional networks nationally and internationally, as well as in disseminating research to a wider public. It is expected that the successful candidate/position holder is willing to develop grant applications (RCN/EU).
A commitment to the department’s standards for teaching quality, recruitment, and public outreach activities is expected. You must be willing to engage in the ongoing development of the discipline and contribute to the university as a whole.

We are seeking applicants with broad experience in applied analytical and environmental chemistry, covering a range of application areas that are preferably relevant to the department's unique location in the high north. This includes expertise in sampling and sample treatment from various sources such as water, air, soil, sediment, and biological materials. Applicants should have conducted independent original research in applied analytical and environmental chemistry at a high international standard, as evidenced by a strong scientific track record with publications in peer-reviewed journals, a research statement, and an outline of a proposal for future research. The research focus should complement existing activities within the department. Ability to secure external funding should be documented by previous applications or through the research plans.

All applicants for teaching and research positions shall document their pedagogical competence.
You must have acquired basic competence for teaching and supervision at higher education level. This includes basic skills in planning, conducting, evaluating and developing teaching and guidance.
Documentation requirement
a) Applicants who have completed education or courses designed to provide teaching competence for teaching at universities and colleges, equivalent to a minimum of 200 hours, must attach diploma and curriculum for the completed course.
b) Other applicants shall describe, assess and document their competence as a teacher and supervisor. The skills must be documented in the form of a teaching portfolio.
If the pedagogical competence can be acquired within two years of appointment, applicants shall not be ranked based on pedagogical competence.
Those who do not satisfy the requirements may be appointed on a permanent basis on the condition that they satisfy the requirements within two years of appointment.

If there are no fully qualified applicants for a permanent position, an interim appointment may be made for a period of one year in a lower position.

The successful candidate must be willing to get involved in the ongoing development of their department and the university as a whole.
The allocation of working hours is flexible and allocated on a case-by-case basis. In general, Associate Professors will spend an equal amount of time on teaching and research and development work for teaching after time spent on other duties has been deducted. As a norm, the time resources spent on administrative duties constitutes 5 % for academic staff.
The remuneration for Associate Professor is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1011.
