Are you motivated to take a step towards a doctorate and open up exciting career opportunities? Do you have a background in electrical engineering, energy economics, energy systems, mathematics or physics, and are you interested in sustainable energy and electricity markets? As a PhD candidate with us, you will work to achieve your doctorate, and at the same time gain valuable experience that qualifies you for a further career in higher education and research, in and outside academia.
The Department of Electric Energy (IEL) at NTNU is seeking a highly motivated candidate for a full-time (100%) PhD position for 3 years as part of the project “Markets for Zero-Carbon Energy Systems”. You will join the research group Electricity Markets and Energy System Planning (EMESP) at IEL, where we foster an open, inclusive, and collaborative working environment.
Our working environment is characterized by its friendly and supportive atmosphere, with regular gatherings such as professional meetings within the research group, colloquia, shared lunches, and “Friday coffee” sessions to wrap up the week. The research group is also associated with the NTNU Energy Transition Programme which arranges monthly Energy System Seminars and the Yearly Energy Transition Week at NTNU. These formal and informal occasions provide opportunities to exchange ideas, celebrate milestones, and strengthen connections. PhD candidates also arrange social activities, open to everyone who wishes to join, creating a welcoming and inclusive community.
The PhD position is funded by NTNU and is part of a collaborative energy research programme between NTNU and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Your immediate Line Manager will be the Head of Department.
To reach the decarbonization goals, energy supply must be shifted from fossil fuels to renewable and other clean energy sources. To handle variations and uncertainties in wind and solar power output, the system must deploy energy storage, demand flexibility and sector coupling in a much larger extent in the future. Markets need to be designed with these resources in mind to ensure efficient investments and operations in energy systems. Whether current power markets are sufficient, or alternations or complete re-designs are needed, is highly debated and investigated among analysts, policy makers and researchers worldwide.
This PhD position will contribute to this development by researching current and potential market designs for zero-carbon energy systems. The work will build upon theoretical and simulation-based models developed at NTNU and MIT. As different carbon-free energy carriers are expected to be highly connected in the future, the scope of the research is not limited to electric power but could also analyze markets for other energy carriers.
The PhD is part of the NTNU-MIT Energy Research Programme: A joint research effort between the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to conduct cutting edge, collaborative research in energy technologies. More details about the topics covered by the collaboration are found here: https://www.ntnu.edu/nmerp
The PhD project will be supervised by Professor Magnus Korpås at NTNU and co-supervised by principal research scientist Dr. Audun Botterud at MIT Laboratory of Information and Decision Systems, who have collaborated within this research area for several years. The PhD candidate will have their base at NTNU campus Trondheim and is expected to do a research stay at MIT during the PhD period and to collaborate with a PhD student or postdoc at MIT within the same research programme.
Be prepared for changes to your work duties after employment.
Further assessment of both written and oral English language skills and the ability to communicate fluently will be conducted in the continued selection process and during any interviews for all applicants.
